Municipal Intelligence & Data Methodology

Public Records Provenance

Our civic tracking databases pull directly from official municipal Open Data feeds published by the City of New York and the Roosevelt Island Operating Corporation (RIOC). Records are normalized, mapped to physical island building complexes, and indexed for sub-second retrieval.

  • •
NYC Department of Buildings (DOB): Daily permits, structural alterations, crane operations, and Environmental Control Board (ECB) safety violations queried via NYC Open Data API (BIS and NOW datasets).
  • •
NYC 311 Service Requests: Non-emergency municipal complaint logs filed within ZIP code 10044, tracking heating outages, water leaks, elevator failures, and sanitation turnaround hours.
  • •
NYC Housing Preservation & Development (HPD): Residential building code citations, lead paint violations, and emergency repair orders across Island residential developments.
  • •
RIOC Public Safety Department (PSD): Official public incident blotters transcribed from regular police activity logs, classified by location, incident category, and disposition.
  • •
DOHMH Restaurant Health Inspections: Sanitary inspection scores, letter grades, and violation points for Island food service establishments.
Historical Newspaper Preservation

The Main Street WIRE Archive

Between 1996 and 2017, The Main Street WIRE served as Roosevelt Island's local community newspaper, documenting community board meetings, infrastructure changes, tenant disputes, Tram modernizations, and daily island life.

To recover and preserve this historical record, we scraped the newspaper's archived PDFs and page scans from the Internet Archive (archive.org). The issues were then linearized for fast web viewing and indexed across 286 editions comprising 3,400+ pages with full-text search.

Fair Use & Non-Profit Educational Notice

Roosevelt Island Report is not affiliated, associated, or connected with the former Main Street WIRE newspaper or its original publishing staff. These historical newspaper issues and companion municipal documents are preserved and hosted independently as a non-profit community reference service under 17 U.S. Code § 107 (Fair Use) for educational, historical, and research purposes.

Accountability & Corrections

Corrections & Updates Policy

Accuracy is essential to civic trust. When factual errors occur in our reporting, dataset mappings, or building profiles, we correct them promptly with an editorial clarification note detailing what was changed and when.

If you are a resident, tenant association officer, business owner, or municipal representative and believe a public record or article contains a factual error, please contact us directly with relevant documentation.

Privacy & Redaction Standards

Protecting Resident Privacy

While municipal filings and police blotters are public documents, we recognize the importance of individual privacy. Our ingestion pipeline automatically scrubs personally identifiable information:

  • • Personal telephone numbers and email addresses are never published.
  • • Individual residential leaseholder and apartment numbers are omitted from blotter titles.
  • • Data displays focus strictly on building-level structural conditions and municipal incident types.
